Above the mantel of the Raleigh Tavern's Apollo Room is the motto "Hilaritas Sapientiae et Bonae Vitae Proles." - "Jollity, the offspring of wisdom and good living." Established around 1717and named after Sir Walter Raleigh, who had attempted the first colonization of Virginia in 1585. The Raleigh Tavern played a role in the history of the United States and the entertainment of historical figures. Thomas Jefferson, then a student at the College of William and Mary, attended a dance at the Raleigh Tavern. When the House of Burgesses protested the Townshend Acts in 1769, it was desolved by the governor; the parties made straight away to the Raleigh Tavern to conspire. A group including Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, Francis Lightfoot Lee, and Dabney Carr met to plan the Committee of Correspondence, which handled communication between the colonies - a first step towards unity.
